Improvised Feature Film Double Bill (includes Director talks and Q&A)

World Premiere of ‘LoveStuck’ by Murray Fahey (AUS), a film from the Producer of Alex & Eve, Dags, and more, featuring a host of improvisers present during previous Improventions. Murray will be present to introduce and answer questions.

Australian Premiere of ‘Should I Stay or Should I Go’ (EUR), a remarkable collaboration featuring five chapters by five directors in five European countries, with this screening including an introduction and Q&A with Austrian Director, Beatrix Brunschko.

‘Duplicity’ by Joe Bill (USA) and ‘Viola Spolin Showcase’ by Gary Schwartz (USA)

Chicago Improv Theatre legend, Joe Bill returns to Australia for Improvention – Festival Shows of Improvised Comedy and Theatre​. This time, “Duplicity” results from a two-day intensive workshop program, in which he will take improvisers from all over Australia, NZ, and the world, and ask their on-stage characters to hold on to a secret throughout the performance.

Gary Schwartz, the world’s leading exponent of Viola Spolin technique (Spolin was the first to use games to solve problems in theatre training, and her work spawned much of what is modern stage improvisation), showcases two-days of work with improvisers throughout our spontaneous world.

“Seen From An Island” DOUBLE BILL from Reunion Island, Taiwan, and Australia

A remarkable audience experience of several cultures, this double bill opens with “Seen From An Island”; an experiential collaboration between indigenous Australian artist Kamarra Bell Wykes from Australia’s leading indigenous theatre company, Ilbijerri, and Keng-Sam, and improviser from the French Department of Reunion Island, in the Indian Ocean. In Act II see “Triple Guts Impro”, an unusual insight into Taiwanese culture, by artists from Guts Improv.

Featured Swedish guest director, Victoria Bang, in duo mode with WA’s Glenn Hall present “#perfectmatch2k30”. Downloading Love™ is easy. There is an app, an algorithm that enables any relationship; lust, sex and love are not bound by money, time or place. But what happens when there is a glitch?
In Act II, “The Mighty Little Puppet Show”, features ABC3 personality, Rob Lloyd and Caitlin Yolland, bring their Melbourne International Comedy Festival hit to Canberra, building the faces of their puppets live on stage to create new characters.

“A World Between Words” Double Bill from South Africa and Australia

In a world with no spoken language dwells Melbourne’s Nigel Sutton leading a performance generated by improvisers from across the world of impro in a week-long January process held in Canberra, called Impro Invention. A very physical, often silent, and always surprising full-cast show. This is preceded by South African improviser, Candice D’arcy, with “True Fiction”; an improvised documentary, utilizing both stage and cinematic conventions to tell a hero’s journey.

“Parallel & Barfly” DOUBLE BILL from USA and Australia

Two legends walk into a bar…… Chicago improve master, Joe Bill, and Melbourne’s Jason Geary (Slideshow, and face of iSelect), use all the resonance they have, to create the Tom Waites inspired “Barfly”. Earlier in the evening, Artistic Director of Improvention, Nick Byrne presents “Parallel”, in which actors from many countries create three parallel stories, simultaneously sharing the same stage, in this innovative, organic and physical work, created in Canberra and soon to tour Europe!

“Ants” Double Bill from Austria, USA, and Australia

In Act I “Love Makes The World Go Around” is a collaboration between Canberra’s own Catherine Crowley and Melbourne’s Katherine Weaver, examining the language of love in all its forms. In Act II, members of the outstanding international improviser grouping, Orcas Island Project, Beatrix Brunschko (Austria), and Tom Johnson (USA), collaborate to present “Ants”; an entire show emerging from the small, but highly committed, actions of individual improvisers.

“The Kammarspel & Hour of the Wolf” Double Bill from Sweden and Australia

Opening with a dark dramatic family drama in the style of Strindberg, Bergman or Lars Noren, special guest Swedish improviser Anders Fors takes us to where improvisation rarely dares to go. Then genre specialist, Melbourne’s Tim Redmond, maintains the mood with a blast of the most dangerous of hours, when our body temperature is reduced to its coldest between 3:00am and 4:00am – this is the “Hour of the Wolf”.

A large ensemble cast illuminate the group mind in its best light through movement, poems, stage pictures, and stories, in American director Domeka Parker’s “Echo”, followed by an Edgar Allan Poe inspired, chorus-narrated genre performance from Canada’s Amy Shostak, “Fear of the Unknown”. North America’s finest, joined by improvisers from all over Australia and the world.

“Swipe Right” Double Bill from Brisbane and Canberra

“Swipe Right” is a show friendship and dating, from the perspectives of different women, directed by Camilla Percy of Brisbane’s ImproMafia. In Act II, a fast-paced cheeky game, “The Undecagon”, presented by Canberra’s Reid Workman, sees players in a scenic battle with each other to incorporate and justify eleven random elements.

Canberra Impro Challenge Grand Finale – Double Bill from Perth and THE WORLD 

 

This is the impro event of the year, with performers competing throughout the festival to make tonight’s Grand Finale and become the Canberra Impro Challenge Maestro for 2016. Cheer the locals, marvel at the experts, boo the judges, and most of all, laugh lots and lots and lots!
Before the Grand Finale, itself, comes a special treat, with outstanding Perth improviser, Glenn Hall, presenting “Yes”, in which some of the world’s most inspiring improvisers allow their peers to create fiction from each other’s true personal stories. An international feast!
